Prototyping Steps

STEP 1: WRITE DOWN YOUR IDEA

You never know when you are going to be inspired and have that “aha!” moment, so always have a way to write down your idea. These days almost all cell phones have some sort of notepad application that will allow you to write down a simple description of your idea.  It does not have to be detailed, just enough information so you can recall your idea.

STEP 2: SEEK OUT AN EXPERT

Seek an expert engineer that specializes in product development. Even though you are the mastermind of your idea, your engineer will turn your idea into something worthwhile. You never hire an attorney to file your taxes and the same goes with product development!

STEP 3: WORK WITH YOUR ENGINEER

Go through form design with your engineer. Don’t skimp on this step. If a remote control does not fit your hand as well as it should, you probably wouldn’t channel surf as much as you do. Rely on the expertise of your engineer and work with them to improve upon your product.

STEP 4: FINALIZE YOUR IDEA

At some point you will have to move the project along to the next phase. You wont always get it 100% right on the first go around.  Don’t get get caught up in the idea of immediate perfection. This is far too often one of the pitfalls innovators experience.

STEP 5: ADAPT/MODIFY YOUR IDEA

Your project will evolve and will continue to do so throughout its life cycle. Improvements are good! They keep things from becoming stale.

STEP 6: HAVE A PROTOTYPE MADE

Have a functional (working)  prototype made. It will prove your concept and determine whether you need to improve upon your idea. View our portfolio to see some samples we have made.

STEP 7: REPEAT STEPS 3-6

Repeat steps 3-6 as necessary to refine your idea. It’s a never ending cycle. Once your product is on store shelves you may have to repeat the process as necessary.
